The Sybil

 by Alberto Julián Pérez ©

At the corner of my street
lives a homeless person.
The poor woman is insane.
Turn inward, she talks to herself.
She is about thirty years old.
The neighbors pass by without saying anything.

She came to the neighborhood a year ago.
She spread her blankets on the sidewalk,
near a sewer. That place is her home.
There she eats, sleeps and spends her days.

She is a modern woman:
she owns a broken radio and a calculator.
She turns or presses their buttons and talk to them.
Maybe they understand her and give her answers.

We have accepted her as part of our reality.
The children look at her with curiosity.
She lives in her own world.

Dirty, she is covered in rags
in winter and in  summer.
An old dog, who became her friend,
sleeps by her side. He is the only creature
who gives her his warmth, his affection.
Every noon she feeds the pigeons
the leftovers of the leftovers she receives.

She does not pay attention to us,
and ignores what happens at her side.
"She has lost her reason", we say,
but we don´t know what reason is.

It seems that she hears voices.
Who knows what they say.
For me she is like a Sibyl
that receives messages from beyond.

The neighbors try not to get too close.
She smells bad and surely has lice.
They do not want to get infected.
What would happen to us
if we went through, with her,
that invisible wall
and cross to the other side,
which we do not know?

We take this opportunity to make our catharsis.
This dirty woman serves to cleanse us.
We purge our fear of abandonment and failure.

Oh destitute, oh innocent Sibyl, forgive our debts!
We are part of your misery!

Maybe this is a test God sends us
and we are the ones being watched .
In this labyrinth without exit
I keep my hopes for resurrection.

She seems to inhabit within a recurring dream.
I think the voices she hears
are the same ones who speak to poets.

There is a tragic beauty in her.
Her life seems like a metaphor of purgatory or hell.

In her luck I see reflected the fate of many artists,
helpless in face of reality, prisoners of their dreams.

I feel that she expresses something
that goes beyond what we see.
Her silence is an enigma pregnant with questions.

Oh innocent Sibyl! Grant me a wish!
Make the distance disappear between God and us.

Look at me in the eyes once. Take my two hands.
Trust me the secrets of your voices,
and tell me, if you can, who we are.

Vuelta hacia adentro, habla sola.

Allí come, duerme y pasa sus días.

No quieren contagiarse.

el destino fatal de muchos artistas;

¡Oh inocente sibila!
¡Concédeme un deseo!
Haz que desaparezca la distancia
entre dios y nosotros.

Mírame por una vez a los ojos.
Toma mis dos manos.
Confíame los secretos de tus voces,
y dime, si puedes, quiénes somos.
